Honoring National Cheer Up the Lonely Day

Did you know that today is National Cheer Up the Lonely Day? It’s true! And you know what else is true? Motherhood can feel LONELY. Even with that beautiful new baby cooing in your lap and maybe even starting to offer a sweet grin (or was it a gas pang?), the days of adult conversations, going out whenever you felt like it, and not having to cancel plans because of a sick infant or diaper blow-out can feel like a distant memory. It can feel like nobody sees you any more or notices anything about you other than your ability to feed and clothe a baby. And on top of it all, there can be feelings of shame or guilt for feeling this way, even though it is oh-so valid. According to Postpartum Support International, 1 in 5 Moms and 1 in 10 Dads suffer from postpartum depression.
Here are a few suggestions to observe National Cheer Up the Lonely Day this year:
- Think about someone you haven’t talked to in a while, especially any postpartum friends or family members. Give them a call and let them know you’re thinking of them. Give them a chance to really talk. But be prepared to call back if it’s not a good time when you try to call.
- If you are a new parent and experiencing loneliness, reach out to your birth or postpartum doula. Doulas are trained to listen non-judgmentally and really hear what you are saying and see what you are doing and feeling. Sometimes that is the most important kind of support that we can offer. Your doula will be happy to validate what you’re feeling with a text message or phone call, and can probably schedule a longer visit if needed. They are also trained to look for red flags that might indicate a more serious level of treatment is needed.
- If you think that you may be experiencing more prolonged or pronounced feelings of depression or anxiety, it is always best to reach out to your medical provider sooner than later. Postpartum Support International is also an excellent resource for information, support, and a HelpLine that parents can call between 8 am and 11 pm EST.
