How a Postpartum Doula Can Help You Get More Sleep

Ah, sleep…. If you are in the postpartum phase, getting a decent night’s sleep may feel like a distant memory. You love your baby so much, but the nights stretch on and on, and you may feel desperate for this little one to just fall asleep for a few hours. What is a new parent to do?
It may be time to call in a postpartum doula for help! Sleep support is the number one priority expressed by a majority of postpartum clients, and for good reason. Sleep is a precious resource, and you need an adequate amount of sleep to heal from your birth and take care of your newborn during the day. Postpartum doulas are trained to help you learn to soothe your baby and maximize your own opportunities for sleep. And you can even hire a postpartum doula for overnight support. Yes, it’s true! A postpartum doula will stay overnight to care for your newborn so that you can get the rest you need. Depending on your needs, preferences, and infant-care plans, this can take different forms, including:
- doula stays in another room with the baby, providing all necessary care until the morning so you can wake up refreshed
- doula stays in another room with the baby, providing soothing care and diaper changes but bringing the baby to you for nursing as needed
- baby stays with you while sleeping, but doula is available to help with rocking, soothing, and other tasks as needed to
If you are struggling with sleep or any other issues after bringing home a newborn, I would love to talk to you about how I can help! Please fill out the contact form to request a free consultation.
