Client stories mini-series, Part 3
A rural, spiritually grounded first-time home birth story supported by doula and midwife care
Considering a First-Time Home Birth

I met Ella after church when she asked to discuss her interest in a first-time home birth. Living in a rural area, she preferred not to use the nearby hospital and was intimidated by the long drive to a larger city. Ella sought a personal, peaceful, and spiritually grounded birth experience that aligned with her values.
We sat at her farmhouse table, drinking tea and discussing her questions, hopes, and worries. She had chosen a midwife and started reading books about birth, while her husband Jacob felt excited but nervous. Some books suggested he would need to guide her through labor, and he was unsure about that responsibility. We explained that with a doula present, he could just focus on being a caring support while I helped them both physically and emotionally. It can be overwhelming to see a loved one in labor, and partners also need support.
The Labor Journey: Calm and Confidence at Home
Ella waited patiently—if expectantly—for labor to begin. Finally, at nearly 41 and a half weeks, her body began the work. Throughout the night and day, she texted and called as her sense of “this is it” slowly solidified. By 4 p.m., she was ready for me to come.
When I arrived, Jacob let me in, and I found Ella calmly breathing through a contraction in her rocking chair. Over the course of the evening, as labor deepened, we worked side by side—breathing, praying, offering counterpressure and massage. It was hard work, but it unfolded with grace. At one point, she got into the birth pool and became so relaxed she nearly fell asleep, even as her body continued its powerful efforts to bring her baby into the world. Later, Ella reflected on her experience with doula support:
She was absolutely incredible and a big part of why I loved my son’s birth.
Pushing and Welcoming Baby in a First-Time Home Birth
When it came time to push, Ella’s mom—who had been staying next door—was invited in. Pushing was a new and unfamiliar skill, and Ella asked more than once, “Why isn’t it working?” even though her midwives could see clear signs of progress and glimpses of her baby’s head with each effort. After trying several positions, what worked best turned out to be reclining against me on the bed, with me supporting her from behind. In that moment of surrender and strength, everything came together.
Their two dogs snoozed in their crates. But when the baby cried out just before sunrise, one came running to welcome this new little soul. After the first postpartum and newborn checks were completed and the baby had fed at the breast, the birth team quietly slipped away, leaving the family nestled together in that early morning light.

Postpartum Support and Breastfeeding After a First-Time Home Birth
Two days later, I returned for a postpartum visit. Ella was radiant and still soaking in her new role as a mother—but she was also worried. The baby seemed less interested in latching and looked a bit dehydrated. So we sat down and talked about those worries.
The midwife had provided advice, but it’s hard to take in so much new information—especially in the overwhelming days just after giving birth. We broke it down and talked it through one step at a time. I encouraged Ella to spend some time just holding her baby skin-to-skin and offering the breast without pressure to latch. Later, she told me that simple tip had given her the confidence to enjoy her baby without pressure. And, as it turned out, that was exactly what he needed to figure out nursing on his own.

A New Family Chapter
Establishing a successful breastfeeding relationship after their first-time home birth has allowed Ella and Jacob to pursue another dream together: launching their own coffee roasters and tasting room. The best part (other than the delicious coffee)? Their baby gets to come to work with them! A beautiful beginning to this new chapter in every way.
