Younger men have a duty to their older brothers to stand ready when barriers grow thin and resolution weakens. To be near when tears grow easier and pain feels keener.

On several occasions in my life I have sat with older men while they shared a loss that would be difficult for any of us. A loss that can break down the resolve men feel they must maintain. We must be strong and always be the wall our family can lean against. Age can make that difficult.

Diminishing physical health, weariness, any number of factors can weaken that tower. Men may still be unable to appear vulnerable to children and spouses, but often the grief is from the loss of either or both. Unexpectedly a younger man may see the tears of an older man suddenly flow. Its a gift to be present and accept the pain. Be prepared for these moments. Its a trust and a gift that can be offered. And accept that some day you may be yourself feeling gratitude.
